Who is eligible for this scholarship?
Eligible candidates for the scholarship will include:
· High school seniors with good academic record who have been accepted to an accredited institution of higher learning, pursuing certification in an agricultural field, accepted in a two-year or four-year program leading to a degree in horticulture, agriculture, food science, forestry or a related field.
· College level students with a good academic record who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or post-graduate degree in the above-mentioned fields.
· High school students with a good academic record who have been accepted to, or are enrolled in, the South Carolina Governor’s School for Agriculture at John De La Howe.
County of Residence of the candidates will be considered in the following order:
· First preference will be given to Newberry County applicants.
· Second consideration will be given to residents of Saluda, Union and Laurens counties.
· Third consideration will be given to applicants residing in other SC counties, with preference to more proximate counties.
The application requests certain documents and pieces of information. Be sure to include the following items in your package before submitting it. If you are a high school student, you may need to work with your school career counselor/guidance counselor or other administrator for some of the requirements.
Checklist:
1. Completed Application Form
2. Certified record of high school grades (or college transcript as applicable)
3. List of colleges/universities applied to, intended major and admission status with the schools listed
4. One recommendation letter from a high school science/agriculture teacher, guidance counselor, college instructor or advisor.
5. List of other scholarships received (source and amount received) and any prizes, honors or other awards
6. List of extra-curricular activities (athletics, dramatics, music, service clubs, community projects, etc.) memberships in student societies, and any relevant work experience to date.
7. Brief essay (100 words or less) stating your career goals and reasons for choosing your field of study.
8. If applicable, a brief statement of extenuating circumstances relevant to financial information.
General Rules:
The scholarship(s) will be awarded on the basis of character, sincerity of purpose, community activities, academic achievement, and dedication to the fields of horticulture, agriculture, food science, forestry or other related fields.
The scholarship funds will be paid directly to the candidate’s college and will be distributed no later than August 20, 2023 following approval by the Membership of the Scholarship Committee recommendation.
The scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $1000 per academic year.
Recipients may re-apply in subsequent years, and said application will be placed into consideration with current year applicants. In all cases of selection, the decision of the Scholarship Committee will be final.
How to Apply:
Interested candidates who meet the above-stated qualifications should complete and sign the attached scholarship application form. Please include all requested attachments. Current high school students who are applying for the scholarship may need to return the completed package to their high school’s college advisor/counselor for review and forwarding to the address below.
Applications must be postmarked no later than May 19, 2023.
